Eli is a highly dedicated, gifted, and creative language instructor. He is particularly well suited to teaching students at the introductory level, though I’ve no doubt that he would also be effective in courses aimed at higher levels. Among Eli’s talents is an ability to engage with each student on his or her own level, integrating us all within a single, mutually rewarding experience. Thus, whether a rank beginner, or a groping novice (like myself), or even a relatively advanced speaker of Hebrew, we can all benefit and grow together in our command of the language. Another of Eli’s talents is his ability, when appropriate, to bring in Arabic cognates to Hebrew words and expressions. In doing so, he not only expands our awareness of the Semitic languages as a whole, but he also encourages a sense of empathy with other Middle Eastern cultures—a much-needed quality especially in these trying times. Finally, I appreciate the way Eli’s pedagogical style combines a variety of linguistic dimensions and media. One week, for example, he might present a dialogue exploring a variety of goods in a typical clothing store; another week, we might read about his own early morning routine before heading off for work; another week, we might delve into a collection of Hebrew sayings and words of wisdom. All fascinating! My personal favorites are the lovely Israeli songs by well known popular musicians like Naomi Shemer and Nurit Hirsch, which often feature thought-provoking lyrics as well. Thank you so much, Eli, for giving us a terrific course!
